July 15, 1999 Tillikum a 22ft killer whale is housed at Sea World Orlando kills a man that secretly stayed in the park after hours to swim with the killer whales. Tillikum is the largest killer whale in captivity and was moved to Florida because of the death of a trianer.
The water in Tillikum's tank was 55 degrees and the man was stripped bare. Police had said this man drowned in Tillikums tank or died from hypothermia. There were no bite marks or blood in the tank says officials. After the man had died officials say Tillikum thought he was a toy and began to play with him. Orcas love to play.
Animal rights groups say that a whale that has cause death in humans should not be held in captivity, and that they are too dangerous. Do you think this is right? Tillikum, even though in captivity is a wild animal. All people aware of this should be informed that there are chances of tradgedies like this one. They have instinks that can take over them even after being in captivity for years. Tillikum is a stunning 11,000 pounds and is only 14 years old, he can easily kill a person. Killer whales are not natrualy agressive towards humans.
Tillikum has fathered four calves is not trained to interact with humans but I have seen him in many shows at Orlando's Sea World. But being the largest whale in captivity there needs to be precautions. In the new show Believe and Shamu Rocks Tillikum has preformed. The trainers do not enter the water when Tillikum is in the main show tank but he does put on an amazing preformance. Tillikum is also preforming in Dine With Shamu.
This truly amazing animal shouldnt be looked at as "the whale that kills", any whale can kill a person. He helps the captive whale population increase, he is used for breeding. He is very unique and is my favorite Killer whale here in Florida.
